If the situation had calmed down for the time being, the coronavirus would have kept the world on tenterhooks again. However, another virus worries the population much more in one part of the world.

The Arcturus variant put experts on alert in April this year. It first appeared in India at the time, causing the number of people affected to explode within days, according to the Mercury. The country now faces the simultaneous challenge of another, apparently far more insidious virus.

Encephalitis: Possible consequence of infection with the Nipah virus
According to T-Online, the Nipah virus has broken out in India. Those contracting it risk a respiratory disease and so-called encephalitis (i.e., an inflammation of all or part of the brain tissue).

This is not the first time the Asian continent has been affected by an outbreak of the virus. So far in history, cases have been detected in Southeast Asia (e.g., Singapore) and South Asia (India and Bangladesh), according to the website tropeninstitut.de.

According to information from the Tagesschau in Germany, two people have already died from the virus, and more people may be infected. A lockdown has therefore been imposed in the affected region of Kerala, in the south of the country.

Transmission of the virus
The virus can be transmitted by droplet infection and ingesting contaminated food. The tricky part is that there is currently no vaccine available against the disease.

As the Tagesschau further reports, the WHO is greatly concerned about India. The disease, which has a mortality rate of between 40% and 75%, could allegedly “trigger a worldwide epidemic”.
